Staffing and Assessment Services -- Connecting people and jobs

Overview

Managers may use the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) to hire high school and university students from more than 350 disciplines. Departments may hire students for temporary jobs all year-round.

How FSWEP can benefit your organization

Your department can benefit from students' high energy, knowledge of, and fascination with new technologies, and familiarity with current and innovative ideas. You can increase the representativeness of your workforce by considering students who belong to one or more of the designated employment equity groups.

Students are initially hired for one academic term. When their term is over, you may continue to re-employ students (one academic term at a time), for as long as they remain eligible under the program, by completing and submitting a request for re-employment. Also, upon completion of their studies students can be bridged into determinate or indeterminate positions.

Two recruitment options

  1. Access the FSWEP Inventory of applications by students by submitting a request for referrals to the PSC. The PSC normally refers five students for each job opportunity offered.

    Your organization's responsibilities will include:
    • Assessing the referred candidates by phone or in person
    • Requesting proof of full-time student status and citizenship
    • Determining the student's rate of pay based on the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Students
    • Making the offer(s) of employment
    • Completing the referral results form and submitting it to the PSC
    • Informing all referred candidates of the final results of the process
    • Developing a mandatory learning plan
  2. Access the FSWEP Departmental Programs list to identify students for employment. FSWEP Departmental Programs exist in certain departments and agencies to target interested students. If you are interested in creating a departmental program, send your request to : FSWEPLL@psc-cfp.gc.ca.
